Apple is looking into new ways to save weight on their MacBooks , a late USPTO filing shows . They have patented a new room to createcarbon fibercomposites that — unlike traditional ones — look silklike , shining , and lickable :
A composite laminate having an improved cosmetic surface is presented herein . The composite laminate includes a large number of tabloid of preimpregnated material , or prepreg , stack one over another and a scrim layer provided on an exterior aerofoil of the sheet of paper of prepreg . The scrim layer and the sheets of prepreg take form a composite laminate whereby the scrim level constitutes an tabu , exposed open of the composite laminate . Each sheet of prepreg is made from fiber preimpregnated with rosin , and the fibers of the prepreg may be well parallel or woven carbon fibre . The scrim layer may be a glass roughage or carbon vulcanized fiber scrim , or veil , that has absorb resin from the sheets of prepreg during a mold operation . In another shape , the composite laminate includes a plurality of sheets of prepreg heap one over another and first and second scrim layer provided on opposing exterior open of the sheets of prepreg , whereby the tack of prepreg are sandwich between the first and 2nd scrim layers . The first and second scrim layer constitute exposed surfaces of the composite laminate .
Since scrim imbibe resin of the composite , scrim takes on the enhancive properties and colour of resin .
