Marvel just announced its first X - Men movie . Sort of . Along with the elaborated cast announcementforAvengers : Doomsday , Marvel unwrap that several stars from the original FoxX - Menseries are take back , presumptively as their original fictional character . There’sPatrick Stewartand Ian McKellen , James Marsden , Rebecca Romijn , Alan Cumming , and Kelsey Grammar , to embark on .
The cast is still coming and we ’ll add more names when they ’re revealed . But we think it ’s safe to assume they ’re playing Professor X , Magneto , Cyclops , Mystique , Nightcrawler , and Beast .
This is fascinating for a bunch of reasons . The first is that there are two ten - Men casts . There are the one from the 2000 original , X - Men , and the ones from the 2011 reboot / prequel , X - gentleman’s gentleman : First Class . Of naturally , they arrive together in a subsequent film , but if you had to choose which mold was going to shift over to the MCU , you would ’ve imagine the younger one . Though , to be comely , both Stewart and Grammar have already reprised their roles inDoctor Strange in the Multiverse of MadnessandThe Marvels .

Then there ’s also the question of what narrative role these characters are go to play in anAvengersmovie . They ’re not Avengers . They ’re XTC - Men . So is it possible they ’re just sacrificial lamb so Doctor Doom , play by Robert Downey Jr. , can establish his superiority ? Would all of these histrion return just to be kill off ?
Clearly , we do n’t know . We also do n’t know if the versions of the characters that come out inDoomsdayare the same X - Men from that universe . Deadpool & Wolverine , the literal first ten - Men film in the MCU , clearly establish that there are multiple version of all of these character . And , with the reveal that Channing Tatum is returning as Gambit , we know that ’s part of this . So , potentially , these are whole new ones . Or perhaps they ’re not even those lineament .
Nevertheless , it ’s very exciting for long - time superhero cinema devotee to see these name pop up . The Fox cosmos has gotten a few chances at closure in the past , but come back for anAvengersfilm feels like a whole new level .
