Baldur’s Gate 3sees an intrepid group of adventurers thrown together and tasked with saving the world from a mind flayer invasion. The party is a motley crew, made up of different classes and backgrounds, with Wyll Ravengard being easily the most classically heroic of the bunch. First met at Act 1’s Emerald Grove as he assists the party in fending off a goblin attack, Wyll’s personal quest is one of sacrifice and responsibility.

Everycompanion quest inBaldur’s Gate 3offers something a little different and gives fantastic insight into their personalities and hopes for the future. As a Pact of the Fiend warlock,Wyll’s personal story is interwoven with his patron Mizora and her goals, which the party gets drawn into almost immediately. As Wyll progresses throughBG3, he faces tough choices about his own path in life and what person he wants to be after the Absolute has been defeated.

Wyll’s Personal Quest Is Rushed & Lacks Agency

Wyll Shows Who He Is With Acts For Others

Wyll’s personal quest is an odd one inBaldur’s Gate 3,often sidelining him even within his own story. Often calledBG3’s most hated companion, Wyll was extensively rewritten between early access and the game’s full release, resulting in a rushed companion quest.Much of Wyll’s quest revolves around other people, with the focus first on Karlach, then Mizora, and then his father, Duke Ravengard.

OverBG3’s three acts, Wyll is the classic hero stereotype, putting the needs of others first, even if that results in negative consequences for himself. After rescuing Mizora from the Absolute and facing a choice betweensaving Duke Ravengard or his soul,Wyll must decide what he wants to do with his life once the world has been saved. Each choice is very different, setting Wyll on unique paths in life and will determine what ending you get for the favorite son of Baldur’s Gate.

What Happens If Wyll Becomes The Blade Of Avernus

Wyll Continues The Fight For The Sword Coast

The first choice for Wyll is to continue as a hero, switching his name from the Blade of Frontiers to the Blade of Avernus. To have Wyll continue down his path of the Blade, you will need to complete his personal quest by finding the dragon Ansurunder Baldur’s Gate. After the battle, Wyll is racked with guilt at not being able to save the noble dragon from its fate.

The fight with Ansur can be very tough, so having a spellcaster who can castGlobe of Invulnerabilityor having a scroll of the spell is vital.

At this point, you can either encourage Wyll to stick to the path he was already on and remain the Blade or allow him to make up his own mind. Wyll will state that his place is in the wilds of the Sword Coast, not in the Upper City, declaring thathe intends to hunt demons and devilsgoing forward. From here, Wyll will be known as the Blade of Avernus, seeking to embody Balduran’s four pillars of a champion: courage, insight, strategy, and justice.

This path can be chosen even if Wyll remains in his pact with Mizora. If Wyll remains a warlock, then Mizora is fine with him targeting Zariel’s enemies, demons, and fellow devils on the Sword Coast, with her only stipulation being to leave Zariel’s faithful alone. However, if Wyll is no longer bound to Mizora, thenhe vows that she will be his first target, and after losing his warlock powers, he will become a ranger.

What Happens If Wyll Becomes A Duke

Wyll Moves Into Politics

The other option open to Wyll is to become the new Grand Duke of Baldur’s Gate, taking his father’s title. If he is alive, Ulder Ravengard is the one who will broach the subject of Wyll becoming a Duke andencourage Wyll to become the next Grand Duke of the Council. However, if his father is dead, Wyll will be the one to bring up the idea of claiming his father’s title and carrying on as the Marshal of the Flaming Fist.

Companions in the party will pass comment if Wyll has been transformed into a devil by Mizora, but he will point out that once the Absolute has been destroyed, that will guarantee the people’s support for him.You can encourage Wyll to pursue politicseither by pointing out how much good he could do or by mentioning how much power he would wield. Wyll will agree with either dialogue choice, with no roll needed to persuade him.

In the epilogue, Wyll will explain that his father has pardoned almost every Flaming Fist for their actions under Gortash’s command.

As with becoming the Blade of Avernus, this path is open regardless of the status of Wyll’s pact with Mizora. If Wyll is still a warlock, Mizora will become his ‘advisor’and remain by his side in human form. However, if Wyll has broken his pact, he will mention he’s learned some new tricks despite losing his warlock powers, and that hasn’t seen anything of the tricky cambion.

Why You Should Let Wyll Become The Blade Of Avernus

Wyll Stays True To Himself As A Hero

Overall, I think it’s best to encourage Wyll to become the Blade of Avernus rather than step into the murky world of politics. I find it very telling thatWyll will choose to remain a herorather than take up his father’s mantle if he is told to follow his heart. For me, this feels like Wyll finally making a decision for himself rather than what is expected of him.

Wyll can also remain the Blade of Frontiers under two conditions. The first is if he was not transformed by Mizora and did not choose to become Grand Duke. The second is if his personal quest is never completed, and Ansur is never slain.

When spoken to in the epilogue, Duke Wyll Ravengard is composed and speaks about the good he has done for the city, but it all sounds like a campaign rally rather than properly catching up with a friend. This is in stark contrast to talking with the Blade of Avernus at Withers' party.

In this epilogue,Wyll sounds genuinely happy and is excited to tell you all about his adventures in Avernus. He’ll explain that Baldur’s Gate is being rebuilt and, if alive, his father is very proud of him. But most importantly, for me, thisBaldur’s Gate 3path for Wyll opens up options forKarlach to return to Avernuswith him, buying her precious time until her engine can be removed.
