If you ’ve watched the first two picture show in Gainax ’s movie retelling of their hit gum anime Evangelion , then you know the first movie was jolly much a square - forward recap of the TV series ’ first episodes . The second movie added young characters and newfangled angels to fight , taking the story into new district ( our reassessment is here ) . I ’m here to tell you that Evangelion 3.33 : you’re able to ( Not ) Redo , does n’t just find novel territory , it finds an altogether new property , destroys it , and then hop two more attribute over .

What I intend is that the third Evangelion movie is pretty much nothing like any Evangelion you ’ve seen before . The characters are still the same — well , not all of them depend the same , not all of them play the same , but they all still have the same name — there are still EVA Units and Angels , and that ’s about it . Seriously .
It ’s impossible to discourse these variety without revealing major aspects of the fib , so here ’s a SPOILER WARNING for those that want to lie with a bit about it . The picture takes place 14 age after the end of 2.22 , at which point Shinji caused the Third Impact . Pretty much all of humanity is dead , Tokyo-3 is fit . Misato is lead Asuka and Mari in a war against Gendo and NERV . Shinji fire up up from suspended animation to find out he pretty much destroyed the earthly concern and almost every single person left on the satellite hates his guts . As an erstwhile - school Evangelion lover , I ensure you that these major changes to the series are scandalous , but I do n’t know that they ’re make Evangelion any well or more meaningful . Maki , the new character reference enclose in the second film , basically sit on the sidelines . Kaworu is introduce , but his relationship with Shinji is so rushed that it does n’t have anything tightlipped to the impact of the idiot box serial publication . Additionally , the moving picture almost spitefully resist to give Shinji — and thus the audience — information , so instead of capitalizing on all these major alteration , we ’re treated to scene after scene of Shinji asking what the deal is , and everyone else giving him the silent intervention . But my biggest trouble is that while the differences may go down on your mind , they do n’t seem to take the series ’ core themes in any raw directions .
But that ’s not to say you should n’t see it . While I ’m sure a few grumpy fans will be disturb by the scope of the change , I imagine the majority will be beguile with just how unusual the Evangelion story gets in this film . It ’s interesting to see these intimate characters in some radically new situations . And the joy of seeing any variant of Evangelion told with cutting - border animation is undiminished .
If nothing else , Evangelion 3.33 is beautiful . There are scenes in the motion-picture show that will make your jaw drop — if you have the chance to take in the pic in its circumscribed theatrical discharge ( it opens today in choice cities;check here to see if its playing anywhere near you ) I definitely advocate it . I just do n’t eff that when these four movies are finally finished they ’re going to replace the original TV serial publication in anyone ’s hearts .
