The biggest problem with Guardians of the Galaxy Vol . 2 is the first Guardians of the Galaxy movie . Vol . 1 , if you will , was such a immense , surprise reach that most of the monumental audiences who will cluster to see Vol . 2 will all want to relive watching the first photographic film . They ’ll get their wish , sometimes , but other times Vol . 2 is trying something different , by look profoundly into its heroes and their relationships . But one matter holds true for both pic : They ’re both still fun as hellhole .

Once Vol . 2 begins , it grabs you straight off . Set just a few months after the near - staring ( in my mind ) first film , Guardians of the Galaxy Vol . 2 begin with a flashback like its predecessor , then segues into a monumental natural action tantrum during the gap credits with four of the five Guardians fighting a mythologic animate being . The fifth , Baby Groot , just dances along to the music as his friends get the crap beat out of them and the credits roll out .

The scene is a delight . It ’s staring . It ’s everything you anticipate from a Guardians of the Galaxy movie written and directed by James Gunn . It ’s filled with humor , action , beautiful visuals , brave choices , and grampus medicine . Instantly , you ’re as connected to these misfit heroes just as you were in the first movie , just as they are to each other . The Guardians ’ domain — er , galax — is familiar yet feel advanced with potential wonder and weirdness . Seeing the team back together is awesome , and you ca n’t wait to see their unexampled adventure .

This is where Vol . 2 zig or else of zags , because rather of keeping the Guardians together , everyone is give an individual report path that they will take through the bulk of the motion-picture show , and only a few of these paths cross . As a result , the film always has several challenging storylines survive on at once , but it ’s also lack that strong cohesiveness that helped made the first moving picture so beloved .

Here ’s how it ruin down : The Guardians are being hound by an alien backwash known as the Sovereign after Rocket steal from them . Right after that Kurt Russell shows up as Ego , Star - Lord ’s mysterious , absentee Fatherhood referenced in the first film . Once that find , Star - Lord ( Chris Pratt ) , Gamora ( Zoe Saldana ) , and Drax ( Dave Bautista ) go off with Ego to bump out more about his past , while Rocket and Groot get captured by the Ravagers , hired by the Sovereign to drink down the Guardians . On Ego ’s planet , we suffer Mantis , a cryptic new character played by Pom Klementieff . With the Ravagers , several novel characters come to the forefront , admit Taserface played by Chris Sullivan and Kraglin played by Sean Gunn .

And passably much that ’s it . For the rest of the movie , the character are more or less restricted by their storylines . To repair , the film really takes its time exploring each of them . It slows down the yard quite a second , but it also permit for a lot more closeness — we really get into the mind of Peter ’s battle of in conclusion meeting his dad , of Gamora and her step - sister Nebula ’s litigious relationship , and of how Rocket feels about the team .

That break for some of the new or expand characters , too . Michael Rooker ’s Yondu has a larger , much more significant use here . Ego has a huge backstory — as beseem a Living Planet — and purpose in the movie . Gunn ’s story , unsubdivided as it may seem on the surface , is actually incredibly layered because of the amount of sentence we spend each character in a exclusive place . Even if none of the stories happening feel like the key focus of the celluloid , having so much happening at once gives the film an unexpected and powerful emotional sum . Moreso than almost any other Marvel picture , the tearjerking potential in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol . 2 is through the cap .

And yet , with the movie so centre on character and relationships , it can occasionally finger flighty . We latch onto the Peter / Ego story , then have to veer to Yondu and Rocket . Then it ’s Gamora and Nebula , follow by the Sovereign . Individually , the panorama are excellent , and there ’s always a wad going on , but without a clear goal or chief scoundrel , the celluloid seems to be missing a horse sense of function . Everything in the center of the moving picture feel like its meandering , like they ’re all waiting for something to contribute them all back together .

And then something does . I wo n’t go bad it , but there ’s a huge construction , the team reunites , and then the original Guardians of the Galaxy magic is back for the estimable part of its last act . total to that five different Marvel end citation scenes ( ! ) and you ’re almost surely travel to take the air out of the theater with a smile on your aspect .

This is the victory and the tragedy of Guardians of the Galaxy Vol . 2 . Oh , there ’s nothing I specifically dislike about it , and I legitimately love a lot of it . But the shadow of that first movie just looms so mostly . you could tell Gunn wanted to do something unlike with the sequel , withstand some expectations . He come after — Guardians of the Galaxy Vol . 2 is a deeper , more surprising , emotional and superimposed flick than Vol . 1 . But then there are those times it so dead captures the push and excitement of the first pic , so whenever the film is n’t basically mirroring its herald , you ca n’t facilitate but want more of what made you fall in dearest with the Guardians in the first seat . It ’s as if you’re — dare I say it — hooked on a touch sensation ?

But feelings are really what James Gunn is lead for in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol . 2 . Not all of them are the joys of see something totally awing , laughing out loudly , or the tactual sensation of goose pimple on your arm and a shit - eating smile on your side . Some of them are awkward , uncomfortable and even upsetting for the characters , but it gives audiences a deeper , more layered looking at the galaxy ’s grown a - holes . This means the heart of the film is a serial publication of peaks and vale

Vol . 2 is not on the nose the Guardians of the Galaxy film you are ask , which can sometimes feel a little like a letdown . It explores some newfangled focusing , but also is n’t afraid to lend back classic strike from the first moving-picture show , too . After an awesome start that ’s sure to appeal to devotee of the original , the tape’s — er , the movie ’s middle section slows things down , which end up varying wildly and can make it find like it ’s dragging things down . But then it make for back the full lot for a cause of death final performance . And by the end , even wth its differences , Vol . 2 is just as awing as its harbinger .
