“Mila’s math homework is what I did in Calculus when I failed it the first time,” Bush Hager jokes. “When I failed it the first time, which I still have dreams that I’m walking through my high school going to the class which I can’t find ‘cause I failed it.”
“Mila’s 5th grade homework — and I hear her going, ‘You don’t get this? This is above your math level?’ to me. And I’m like, ‘Uh, no. I understand it.’ She’s like, ‘So do this problem. Show me how you do this problem.'”
“And then I have to either sneak out or have Henry do it for me. I have to go right back to that math class in high school. It is so hard. And they don’t do it the right way — good luck!”
“They don’t do it the way that we learned it! Remember when you carried the 1 and all that? They don’t carry the 1s,” Bush Hager explains.
When Kotb expresses her shock, Bush Hager continues, “They don’t carry the 1s anymore! I don’t know why. Somebody thought, ‘Hey, let’s mess with all the parents in the world and change the way we teach math.’ So even though [the parents] wouldn’t know how to do it anyway, now they really don’t know how to do it.”
Bush Hager shares her three kids — Hal, 4, Poppy Louise, 8, and Mila — with husband Henry Hager, 45.
