WhenNetflixhas a breakout hit film, it more often than not leans into its success. This could take the form of signing a deal with a key member of the movie’s talent, but more likely, it involves making a sequel film to that movie.

Last year, the streamer had a big hit with the French shark movieUnder Paris. In that case, theUnder Parisendingfeatured a tease that could imply a continuation of its story. As a result, Netflix is now developing a sequel.

This also happened with the 2022 movieTroll. After the seemingly self-contained action-adventure movie became a record-breaking Netflix hit,Troll 2is underway and is currently set for release in December.

Recently, a report revealed how Netflix would lean into the success of their megahitanimated movieKPop Demon Hunters. The film will be followed up by not one, but two sequels, a live-action movie, and possibly other related content.

Netflix had another movie last year that became a huge breakout hit on the service. Now, the film’s main star comments on the prospect of a sequel, and the signs are not very positive.

Taron Egerton Comments On The Prospect Of Carry-On 2

Taron Egerton comments on whether they are making a sequel toCarry-On. The movie is a 2024 thriller set on Christmas Eve, which follows the story of a TSA agent faced with a huge issue when a traveler attempts to blackmail him into getting a dangerous package through security.

Carry-Ongot largely favorable reviews, scoring an 88% Tomatometer on Rotten Tomatoes. But its real success was found in its streaming numbers. The film quickly shot onto Netflix’s streaming charts and stayed there for a while. Eventually,it became Netflix’s no. 2 most-watched movie of all time.

Speaking withThe Hollywood Reporter, Egerton addressed the likelihood ofCarry-On 2,sayingit would be “hard to achieve” the original intentions of the film “without it feeling contrived.“He viewsCarry-Onas “a celebration of Christmas and a celebration of people who work at Christmas.” Check out the full quote below:

“Carry-On 2is really hard. It’s a celebration of Christmas and a celebration of people who work at Christmas. It then needs to have this huge plot that needs to be foiled and maybe the earwig component. All of that is quite hard to achieve in a sequel without it feeling contrived and to the point of defying credulity. So I have not heard anything, but who knows, stranger things have happened.”

What This Means For Netflix

Egerton’s quote makes it clear thatthere are no active plans forCarry-On 2.As the actor notes, “stranger things have happened,” so it is not impossible that a sequel could still come. Even if it happens, it is not coming any time soon.

This is out of the norm of Netflix’s patterning in recent years.Under Paris,Troll, andKPop Demon Huntersare all examples of how Netflix seeks to capitalize on the success of their streaming hits. WithCarry-On, the company is instead choosing to, at least initially, let it keep the integrity of being a standalone story rather than attempt to milk any viewership they can get.
