Demi Lovatojust refreshed her look.

The 26-year-old singer took fans along with a series of snaps on Instagram story as she started her hair transformation with Nine Zero One salon stylist Amber Maynard Bolt, otherwise known as “Alchemist Amber,” who has been working with the star for eight years. First, Lovato posted a picture of her pre-cut hair, which had grown far beyond her shoulders and down her back. “This was without extensions, y’all! It got so long!” she wrote.

Then, after Amber worked her magic, the star posted another pic from the same angle, but this time with a much darker color and much shorter cut. “I cut about 4/5 inches off her hair! It was a great way to release old energy as well as old color,” Amber tells PEOPLE exclusively. “My favorite part about cutting someone’s hair off is their reaction! Hers was a good one. She was really feeling it.”

“New hair, who dis?” she captioned the Instagram story video.

Amber says the new look was a “natural progression” for the singer. “What inspired the cut simply was change! ” she says. “She’s a hair chameleon.”

Days before her hair switch-up, Lovato clapped back at body shamers, after spotting a headline that saidshe now has a “fuller figure”(the singeris in recovery from an eating disorder).

Lovato posted a screenshot from the articleon her Instagram storyand added, “I AM MORE THAN MY WEIGHT.”

“Too many people today base their ideal body weight off of what OTHERS tell us we should look like or weigh. Articles like these only contribute to that toxic way of thinking,” she said. “If you’re reading this: Don’t listen to negative diet culture talk. You are more than a number on a scale. And I am more than a headline about my body shape.”
