Spoiler alert: The following article contains spoilers from The Rookie season 7, episode 14, “Mad About Murder.”

AsThe Rookieseason 7 gets closer to its finale, the episodes are wrapping up some prominent storylines, which is for the best (despite sometimes ending on a dull note), while wisely focusing on strengthening relationships. ABC’s police procedural has introduced and brought back numerous villains in season 7. Although many had interesting stories, sometimes the number of antagonists we must remember can get overwhelming, especially when most pale in comparison toThe Rookie’s best villains. So,it’s good when the show can get some of the less memorable bad guys, like Malvado, out of the way.

Melissa O’Neil as Lucy Chen and Lisseth Chavez as Celina Juarez in The Rookie season 7, episode 14

Following themostly forgettableThe Rookieseason 7, episode 13,the series returns with more unremarkable storylines in episode 14, but makes up for them with an exciting and emotional team-up.In “Mad About Murder,” Malvado returns when the team investigates a website featuring hitmen for hire on the Dark Web. They recruitThe Rookie: Feds' Laura Stensen to help them track Malvado down. Elsewhere, Celina and Lucy search for a woman’s missing sister, Miles creates new LAPD training videos, and the LAPD faces off against the LAFD in a competitive flag football game.

The Best Part Of The Rookie Season 7, Episode 14 Is Celina & Lucy’s Team-Up

Celina & Lucy Are One Of The Show’s Most Underrated Duos

Despite episode 14’s intention to make Malvado’s case the story of the hour, Celina and Lucy’s investigation steals the show. The twoRookiecharactershave slowly but surely formed a strong sisterhood since Celina’s introduction in season 5. It surely helps that they now live together, but"Mad About Murder" demonstrates how far Celina and Lucy’s friendship has come.Lucy shows up for Celina when she needs it the most, and Celina is more than grateful for her roommate’s help.

Based on “Mad About Murder” alone,it’s easy to see why Celina and Lucy are such a strong pairing(even though they’re undoubtedly one ofThe Rookie’s most underrated duos). Lucy helps Celina face a clout-chasing true crime podcaster who wants to exploit her sister’s murder. Then, she assists Celina when a woman asks them to find her sister, paralleling Celina’s own tragic tale.

Together, they make for a great team and locate the missing girl and her newborn baby. Unfortunately,Lucy kills the kidnapper inThe Rookieseason 7, episode 14, when the mentally unstable woman almost murders the baby. Nevertheless,Celina and Lucy save the day, and their connection grows deeper as a result.

Laura Stensen’s Return Semi-Makes Up For The Weak Story

The Rookieseason 7, episode 14 concludes with Malvado’s death, officially closing the door on his villain arc and Bailey’s controversial connection to the hitman. His ending is predictable but satisfying, asit makes room for the ABC series to focus on other, more intriguingRookieantagonists(likeLiam Glasser and Monica Stevens). Thankfully, Britt Robertson’s return as Laura helps elevate the weak story in the episode and make it a bit more exciting.

Meanwhile, Miles’s LAPD police training video plotline alleviates the episode, which mostly contains darker storylines. The flag-football game and Cooper Manning’s surprise cameo also help lighten the mood during the hour. Overall, though,The Rookieseason 7, episode 14 will be remembered by Celina and Lucy’s partnership, while everything else will likely be forgotten.

New episodes ofThe Rookieseason 7 air Tuesdays at 9pm ET on ABC.
