At a panel forThe Rookieduring this year’sSan Diego Comic-Con, star Nathan Fillion offered an intriguing answer to a question that fans have asked for years. Even thoughThe Rookieseason 8won’t debut until next year, the police procedural has broken new ground. It’ll feature scenes in Prague, which marks the first time that the ABC hit has filmed overseas.
Many viewers, though, are more immediately concerned with what’s next for Tim (Eric Winter) and Lucy (Melissa O’Neil). The turbulent duo have had plenty of highs and lows, even heading intoThe Rookieseason 7 finale, but their courtship could potentially grow more complicated if Tim knew that Lucy and John (Fillion) briefly dated.

During a panel forThe Rookieat this year’s San Diego Comic-Con, withScreenRant’s Rachel Foertsch in attendance,Fillion was asked whether Tim would ever find out that John and Lucy dated. The actor and executive producer responded by revealing thathe has a pitch for it. Series creator Alexi Hawley feels that it’s “ancient history”, but added that he’s interested in Fillion’s pitch.
There’s Potential For Drama
John and Lucy dated for about two monthsbefore the events of the ABC series. Despite the brevity of the pair, it was pretty intense. Lucy was advised to end the relationship by Talia Bishop (Afton Williamson) to avoid going into any murky areas that would impact her job. They both agree, though John is reluctant.
The relationship heats up again when John is shot, but they finally decide that they’re better off being friends. Many seasons and episodes later, the Tim and Lucy pairing feels like it’s endgame. John, for his part, is happily with Bailey (Jenna Dewan). Fans have theorized that Tim must know, since they work so closely together, butthat has never been canon.

Tim should be mature enough to accept that Lucy has had partners before she met him. But there is potential for some good conflict, even if it’s a comedic and light touch, with Tim finally learning the truth. It could be as simple as a throwaway line that ends up driving the B-plot of an episode while highlighting the chemistry betweenThe Rookie’s cast.
Our Take On The Rookie’s Big Question
It Can Be Handled In A Variety Of Ways
It doesn’t have to be, and probably shouldn’t be, a major focus. But even dealing with the short romance as a joke respects the maturity of the characters and addresses a lingering thread that audiences have wondered about. It’s part of the fun of the fact that Tim and Lucy weren’t planned from the very start ofThe Rookie.
