A collaborationism between students and Danish entrepreneurs has produced   pencils that can grow into flowering industrial plant , herbs , and vegetables .

When the composition portion of the pencil is worn - down , you simply put the “ eraser - terminal ” ( which is really   a seed condensation )   in a pot with soil . Eventually , after enough water and sunshine , a plant will sprout . Thesprout pencilscome with a variety of germ , including helianthus , passel , lavender , cherry tomato , sweet pea plant , and wild strawberry .

The pencil are made of sustainably source cedar wood , with the pigmented core made of a mixture of clay and plumbago . The seed pod is also made of cellulose , mean the whole pencil is non - toxic and safe for kids to use . To curb their carbon emissions , the troupe source all their materials locally , with two unlike yield models for their two main markets , Europe and North America .

The estimation was in the beginning developed by three students at Massachusetts Institute of Technology in 2012 .
